Words of the Week

As part of our commitment to citizenship, academics, and life skills, the Ed Snider Youth Hockey Foundation incorporates a discussion of the "Words of the Week" in all of our sessions. After being on the ice for an hour or so, we gather together and talk about the word of the week. The discussion is interactive - the students are asked questions and are asked to define the terms, providing real life examples.

The "Words of the Week":

Schoolwork: Schoolwork is discussed every session and is considered the "Word every week." We discuss the idea that if schoolwork isn't where it should be, then other opportunities like hockey might not be available.

Celebration: We talk about how hockey players celebrate (tapping sticks, raising their hands above their heads, etc.) and why they celebrate. We discuss why celebrating is important and fun.

Effort: We discuss the importance of giving your best effort to every thing you do and how making the effort in trying new things can open up opportunities.

Teamwork: We discuss teamwork, what it means, and the significance of working together vs. working alone. We use real-time hockey examples to emphasize points.

Enthusiasm: We talk about how a positive approach to daily life and challenges can help to motivate and energize.

Respect: Respect is a term that is discussed during multiple sessions. We discuss respect for yourself (healthy living, nutrition, drug free, etc.), team/class mates, teachers/coaches, environment (rinks, schools, neighborhoods, etc.), and "the game" (sportsmanship).

Success: We discuss "success" during our final session - we talk about how the other words/concepts all contribute to success.
